12 Zodiac Signs (Rashis) in Vedic Astrology
In Vedic astrology (Jyotish Shastra), the zodiac is divided into 12 rashis, each spanning 30 degrees of the celestial ecliptic. Unlike Western astrology which uses the tropical (seasonal) zodiac, Jyotish uses the sidereal zodiac, which is aligned with the actual positions of the constellations. This means your Vedic sign may differ from your Western sign by roughly 23 degrees (the ayanamsha).
Each rashi is governed by a specific graha (planet), belongs to one of the five elements (Pancha Tattva), and contains specific nakshatras (lunar mansions) that further refine personality traits and life predictions. Understanding your rashi is the first step toward reading your complete kundli (birth chart).
Aries
Mesha Rashi (मेष)
Mesha Rashi is the first sign of the Vedic zodiac, ruled by Mars (Mangal). It marks new beginnings, raw energy, and a pioneering drive. People born under Mesha Rashi are natural leaders who carve their own path. Mars gives them fire in the belly and a need to act.
Taurus
Vrishabha Rashi (वृषभ)
Vrishabha Rashi is the second sign of the Vedic zodiac, ruled by Venus (Shukra), the planet of beauty and material comfort. This earth sign is all about stability, sensory pleasure, and building something that lasts. Vrishabha natives want security, and they are willing to work steadily for it.
Gemini
Mithuna Rashi (मिथुन)
Mithuna Rashi is the third sign of the Vedic zodiac, ruled by Mercury (Budh), the planet of intellect and communication. Symbolized by the celestial twins, this air sign is defined by curiosity, adaptability, and a constant need for mental stimulation. Mithuna natives are the communicators and quick learners of the zodiac.
Cancer
Karka Rashi (कर्क)
Karka Rashi is the fourth sign of the Vedic zodiac, ruled by the Moon (Chandra). The Moon controls the mind, emotions, and nurturing instinct, and Karka natives feel all of this intensely. This water sign is tied to home, family, emotional security, and deep memory. Karka is the caretaker of the zodiac.
Leo
Simha Rashi (सिंह)
Simha Rashi is the fifth sign of the Vedic zodiac, ruled by the Sun (Surya), king of the nine planets in Jyotish. This fire sign is connected to authority, creativity, and self-expression. Simha natives carry a natural confidence and tend to draw attention wherever they go. The Sun's energy gives them warmth and a desire to lead.
Virgo
Kanya Rashi (कन्या)
Kanya Rashi is the sixth sign of the Vedic zodiac, ruled by Mercury (Budh) in its analytical form. Where Mercury in Mithuna communicates, in Kanya it organizes, discriminates, and refines. This earth sign is about service, health, precision, and getting the details right. Kanya natives find order where others see chaos.
Libra
Tula Rashi (तुला)
Tula Rashi is the seventh sign of the Vedic zodiac, ruled by Venus (Shukra) in its social and diplomatic form. While Venus in Vrishabha reaches for material comforts, in Tula it reaches for harmony, balance, and fairness between people. This air sign is about partnerships, justice, artistic beauty, and the ability to hold multiple perspectives at once.
Scorpio
Vrishchika Rashi (वृश्चिक)
Vrishchika Rashi is the eighth sign of the Vedic zodiac, ruled by Mars (Mangal) in its most intense form. While Mars in Mesha is outwardly aggressive, in Vrishchika that energy turns inward for deep investigation and transformation. This water sign deals with what lies beneath the surface: hidden truths, power dynamics, and the cycle of breaking down and rebuilding.
Sagittarius
Dhanu Rashi (धनु)
Dhanu Rashi is the ninth sign of the Vedic zodiac, ruled by Jupiter (Guru/Brihaspati), the most benefic planet in Jyotish. This fire sign is connected to higher learning, dharma (righteous duty), long-distance travel, and spiritual philosophy. Dhanu natives are seekers. They want to understand the larger meaning behind things and are drawn to teaching what they learn.
Capricorn
Makara Rashi (मकर)
Makara Rashi is the tenth sign of the Vedic zodiac, ruled by Saturn (Shani), the planet of discipline, karma, and earned success. This earth sign is about ambition, responsibility, social standing, and the slow climb toward a goal. Makara natives believe that anything worth having takes time, and they are willing to put in that time.
Aquarius
Kumbha Rashi (कुंभ)
Kumbha Rashi is the eleventh sign of the Vedic zodiac, ruled by Saturn (Shani) in its progressive form. While Saturn in Makara builds traditional structures, in Kumbha it questions and reforms them. This air sign is about innovation, collective welfare, large communities, and thinking ahead of the current time. Kumbha natives see the future before others do.
Pisces
Meena Rashi (मीन)
Meena Rashi is the twelfth and final sign of the Vedic zodiac, ruled by Jupiter (Guru/Brihaspati) in its spiritual form. While Jupiter in Dhanu pursues worldly wisdom, in Meena it moves toward moksha (liberation) and connection with the divine. This water sign is about compassion, imagination, spiritual surrender, and the completion of the soul's karmic journey.
Signs by Element (Tattva)
Fire Signs (Agni Tattva)
Fire signs (Agni Tattva) are passionate, courageous, and action-oriented. Ruled by Mars, Sun, and Jupiter, they bring initiative and enthusiasm to everything they do.
Earth Signs (Prithvi Tattva)
Earth signs (Prithvi Tattva) are practical, grounded, and focused on material security. Ruled by Venus, Mercury, and Saturn, they build lasting foundations.
Air Signs (Vayu Tattva)
Air signs (Vayu Tattva) are intellectual, communicative, and socially oriented. Ruled by Mercury, Venus, and Saturn, they connect ideas and people.
Western Zodiac Signs
The same 12 signs exist in Western astrology, but with different date ranges (tropical zodiac) and interpretations. Western astrology focuses on psychological traits and seasonal energies rather than Vedic nakshatras and doshas. Explore the full Western astrology section to compare.
